{"id":22243,"date":"2026-01-22T10:45:08","date_gmt":"2026-01-22T09:45:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/asleman.org\/?p=22243"},"modified":"2026-01-21T10:50:45","modified_gmt":"2026-01-21T09:50:45","slug":"mise-a-jour-de-la-cartographie-des-herbiers-du-littoral-lemanique-genevois","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asleman.org\/en\/2026\/01\/22\/mise-a-jour-de-la-cartographie-des-herbiers-du-littoral-lemanique-genevois\/","title":{"rendered":"Updating the mapping of meadows along the Geneva Lake shoreline"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\">A recent study has mapped the aquatic meadows in Geneva's Lake Geneva region in 2024 and analysed how they have changed since 2016.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Veritable \u00abunderwater forests\u00bb, seagrass beds play a fundamental role in the lake's ecosystem:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">- spawning grounds and fish nurseries<br \/>\n- habitats and refuges for fish, crayfish and aquatic invertebrates<br \/>\n- the main source of food for several bird species<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The study confirms the positive effects of the re-oligotrophication of Lake Geneva, with the reappearance of characeae (<em>Chara aspera<\/em> and <em>Tolypella glomerata<\/em>), indicative of nutrient-poor waters that have been absent from the lake for over 50 years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">However, the study highlights a sharp decline in seagrass beds, with a loss of around 264 hectares in 8 years, particularly in deep waters, linked to the Quagga mussel, human pressure and potentially global warming.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Given this worrying situation, the protection of aquatic meadows is essential for the functioning of the lake ecosystem.
