N°52: Net'Léman 15 years of civic action

In 2005, a small group of people with a passion for diving and aquatic environments decided, under the impetus of Amanda Melis, to take action with the aim of 𝐩𝐫𝐞́𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐥𝐚 𝐛𝐞𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐞́ 𝐞𝐭 𝐥𝐚 𝐬𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐞́ 𝐝𝐮 𝐋𝐞́𝐦𝐚𝐧. Their aim: to collect waste underwater. Indeed, resulting at 90% from terrestrial activity, most of the waste found in water 𝐧𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐭 𝐩𝐚𝐬 𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐝𝐞́𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐞𝐭 𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐮𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐝𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐞𝐚𝐮𝐱.

This desire to raise as many people's awareness as possible and to keep the action going on the shores of Lake Geneva has given rise to 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐞̀𝐫𝐞 𝐞́𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐝𝐞 𝐍𝐞𝐭'𝐋𝐞́𝐦𝐚𝐧, 𝐪𝐮𝐢 𝐧𝐚𝐢̂𝐭 𝐥𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢 𝟐𝟒 𝐬𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐫𝐞 𝟐𝟎𝟎𝟓.

It is vital to motivate the general public to protect the environment, starting with the one they are familiar with.

It was a shock: nearly 𝟐𝟎 𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐬 of rubbish was collected that day!

With each new edition, Net'Léman continues to pursue its objective, overcoming 𝐝𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐮𝐱 𝐝𝐞́𝐟𝐢𝐬 𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬 and financial issues, as well as communication issues, to bring the project to the attention of the general public.

In 2009, the organisation was awarded 𝐥𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐱 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐯𝐨𝐢𝐬 𝐝𝐮 𝐝𝐞́𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐝𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 in recognition of its economic, environmental and social cohesion values. It was in 2014 that the ASL became a co-organiser of Net'Léman before 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞̀𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐥'𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐞𝐧 𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟔 in order to perpetuate the action that, because of the number of sites cleaned in one weekend, requires particularly extensive logistics.

Despite the drop in the amount of waste taken out of the lake by weight with each edition, a 𝐚𝐮𝐠𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐝𝐞 𝐥𝐚 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐝𝐞 𝐝𝐞́𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐭𝐬 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬 is glaring with a volume of 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧 𝟐𝟎% 𝐝𝐮 𝐛𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐨𝐭𝐚𝐥. An ASL-commissioned study published in 2018 confirmed that 𝐩𝐫𝐞̀𝐬 𝐝𝐞 𝟏𝟎 𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐞𝐬 𝐝𝐮 𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 (𝐝𝐞́𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐭𝐬 𝐬𝐚𝐮𝐯𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐬) 𝐬𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐪𝐮𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐞́𝐞 𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐬 𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐞𝐚𝐮𝐱 𝐝𝐮 𝐋𝐞́𝐦𝐚𝐧.

You too can join the Net'Léman community in preserving the lake and its biodiversity by taking part in the 𝟏𝟎𝐞̀𝐦𝐞 𝐞́𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐥𝐞 𝟑 𝐞𝐭 𝟒 𝐨𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐛𝐫𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬 !
