This issue of Lémaniques recounts an adventure based on close collaboration between the scientific and civil communities, who are working together to understand the phenomena that harm the health of Lake Geneva and to seek practical solutions to safeguard it.
Lemanscope, it is a scientific research project that can be described as participatory science, namely the acquisition of scientific knowledge resulting from collaboration between professional researchers who master all the analysis tools and citizens who are motivated and interested in the subject and volunteer to take part in the project by applying a precise protocol and strictly adhering to the instructions received.
The project is led by EPFL in collaboration with EAWAG, Unil and ASL and is supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation through Agora funding.
The project Lemanscope aims to contribute to the assessment of the health of Lake Geneva and to the understanding of seasonal variations in water transparency and colour through the collection of data obtained with the valuable contribution of 701 volunteers with a boat.
These are loaded:
- to measure water transparency using a Secchi disc, specially manufactured for the project with a 3D printer
- to photograph the colour of the water.
The introduction to the fieldwork carried out with the volunteers is accompanied by a phase aimed at understanding the issues relating to the health of Lake Geneva, which involves.
