EAU'tour du Léman" residential summer camp

EAU'tour du Léman is a 6-day residential summer camp on Lake Geneva aboard the Demoiselle, a 19th-century Latin barque. The 22 children on board, aged between 10 and 13, are accompanied by 6 crew members and 4 counsellors, and discover the riches of the living world of Lake Geneva as they sail from port to port. During the navigation and at the ports of call, games, activities, an introduction to sailing, scientific observations, discoveries of the underwater world, walks and swimming are organised to the delight of the children. More than just a week of adventure and discovery, this week is a real school of life that will remain engraved in the memories of the young sailors.

Discovering the invisible world, the children will go fishing to catch small living creatures in the water. They will then go and observe them using binocular magnifying glasses and microscopes. The aim is to understand the links between all these animals and their importance to us humans, because a better understanding of an environment means it can be better preserved.

In collaboration with the holiday passports of several towns and cantons, the ASL is offering days on the theme of "the living world of Lake Geneva".

Our workshops are in line with curriculum objectives and designed for pupils aged 4 and over. They enable :

  • To raise awareness of the importance of Lake Geneva from an ecological, social and economic point of view.
  • To raise awareness of the challenges of environmental protection and, more specifically, of the central role of the resource 'water' through a sustainable development approach.

For 4 - 6 year olds: Discover Lake Geneva through the senses

In class (90 minutes): By listening to the sounds of the lake, touching objects relating to the animals of the lake and observing the diversity of the fauna and flora of Lake Geneva, the children will discover Lake Geneva and its biodiversity as well as the interactions between them.

For 7 - 12 year olds: Lake Geneva, source of life - a link between man and nature

5 x 90-minute workshops are offered on the following themes

  • The Lake Geneva basin - More than just a lake
How was the lake formed? When did the first humans colonise its shores? Discover the fascinating history of Lake Geneva through group workshops and discussions. Understand the catchment area, a vast region not limited to the shores of Lake Geneva. Wild, then channelled, buried, how have we tried to tame the rivers and what consequences has this had on our local biodiversity?
  • Flora and fauna - A rare treasure to be preserved
What natural aquatic environments exist in Switzerland? How can you recognise them? What animals and plants live in Lake Geneva and how do they interact with each other? Why do certain exotic species pose a threat to our local biodiversity?
  • The invisible world - A little-known yet vital world
Discover the little-known animals and plants of our lake. Using microscopes and binocular magnifying glasses, children will discover the invisible world of Lake Geneva by fishing for aquatic plants that are home to numerous crustaceans, molluscs and other larvae, as well as plankton.
  • Water uses - Supporting human activities
Water is a rare resource that must be preserved. Understand where our tap water comes from and how it is treated to return it to the environment. How much water do we use every day at home and how can we limit our consumption?
  • Sources of pollution - Human pressures on the environment
What is the link between pollution of the seas and oceans and the waste produced in Switzerland? A little game will help children understand that our behaviour here can have an impact at the other end of the world. What effects does this waste have on wildlife and humans? How can we avoid continuing to pollute? There are lots of solutions - let's find out together!

Equipment available:

  • A poster and teacher information sheets so that teachers can prepare the theme and broaden their knowledge if they wish.
  • An educational pack for pupils (aged 8-12) covering the 5 themes on offer
  • Formative assessment sheets that teachers can use if they wish

In search of traces and clues of the biodiversity of Lake Geneva - from 4 to 12 years old

Our workshops are in line with the objectives of the PER (Plan d'Etudes Romand) and are designed for pupils aged 4 and over. They enable :

  • To raise awareness of the importance of Lake Geneva from an ecological, social and economic point of view.
  • To raise awareness of the challenges of environmental protection and, more specifically, of the central role of the resource 'water' through a sustainable development approach.

  • Interactions between species
  • The importance of habitat diversity in supporting aquatic life

In search of traces and clues of biodiversity on Lake Geneva

Search for traces and clues left by animals and plants along the lake to identify them and learn about their history and the links between them.

Lake Geneva, source of life - aged 12 to 19
A 60-minute workshop addressing the 5 themes presented above in the form of a discussion with the students. Depending on the teacher's choice, one theme can be explored in greater depth.

Action against invasive plants (knotweeds) - aged 12 to 19
Knotweed is a plant imported from Asia in the 19th century. They quickly colonised the banks of our rivers and lakes, preventing our native plants from growing. Come and pull out this plant with us, to help us weaken it. It's a fun outdoor activity that helps to promote biodiversity along our banks. All equipment provided by the ASL.

Microplastics in Lake Geneva - an issue on which we must act - from 15 to 19 years old
A 90-minute workshop on the problem of plastic pollution. First, 45 minutes of theory on the issues surrounding pollution of the aquatic environment, followed by 45 minutes of hands-on practice in which pupils use a microscope to count the quantity of plastic contained in a sample of substrate taken from a beach. The aim is to raise awareness of the quantity of microplastic contained on beaches and to think about what they can do to limit contamination.

Fishing the invisible world of Lake Geneva - aged 15 to 19
Discover the little-known animals and plants of our lake, pond or river. In the field, children will go fishing for aquatic plants that are home to many crustaceans, molluscs and other larvae, and for plankton. Using microscopes and binocular magnifying glasses, they can observe their catch and discover the invisible world of Lake Geneva. All the sampling equipment and microscopes are provided by the ASL.

Birdwatching by the lake - ages 15 to 19
Lake Geneva is home to an impressive diversity of water birds. With the help of binoculars and our identification guide, children will learn how to observe birds and discover their way of life. Look at their legs - what differences enable them to swim? Look at their beaks - what does this bird eat? Look at their feathers when they emerge from the water - are they wet?

Waste clean-up action - 15 to 19 year-olds
There is a lot of rubbish to be found on the banks of lakes and rivers. Once in the water, it degrades, polluting the water we drink, entering the food chain or continuing its way to the sea and then the ocean. It's a way of raising awareness of the pollution caused by litter, and taking action. All materials provided by ASL.

Action to collect cigarette butts in urban areas - 15 to 19 years old
The number of cigarette butts found in the environment is worrying when you consider that cigarette butts thrown on the ground can end up in lakes and rivers, and that a single cigarette butt can pollute up to 1,000 litres of water. So it's important to show young people how many cigarette butts can be picked up in a short space of time, and to give them relevant information so that they too can pass on messages to those around them to change their behaviour.

A fun and educational workbook

We offer you a notebook ludical and educational for your children. This booklet includes the youth pages from our quarterly Lemaniques. You'll find a range of topics, with an informative section, a game and a question asked by a child.
